LD Alignment Steps of Process

The following steps of process are used in Fundamental Alignment classes instructed by Scott Long.  These are meant to be used as a general guide when using the alignment rack for everything, start to finish.  Again, these are general steps of process and are not meant to replace any OE specific procedures.

  1. Pull vehicle on to the alignment rack;  Chock LR rear wheel;  Leave vehicle in neutral after LR wheel is chocked

  2. Review tire information placard for proper tire inflation pressure;  Set inflation station if equipped

  3. Scan the VIN with VIN scanner or manually recall vehicle specifications

  4. View vehicle specifications and any other information (special procedures and resets)

  5. View the ball joint specification table and any other information

  6. Perform the dry park inspection on the steering system

  7. Perform inspection on the front suspension system

  8. Inspect ball joints using the ball joint specification table as a guide;  Inspect wheel bearings

  9. Perform the appropriate inspection on the rear of the vehicle

  10. Perform tire inspection

  11. Back vehicle off the rack and pull back on rack to settle suspension for quick/rolling compensation;  Chock the LR wheel;  Leave vehicle in neutral after after LR wheel is chocked;  Steering wheel should remain unlocked

  12. Position vehicle just behind centered turn plates if performing a quick comp;  Position on turn plates if performing a rolling comp or jack comp

  13. Install inflation station air hoses or manually adjust tire pressure

  14. Perform selected compensation procedure

  15. Unlock turn plates and slip plates (slip plates are unlocked when aligning vehicles with independent rear suspensions);  Lower turn plate bridges

  16. Put vehicle in park;  Start vehicle to apply brake pedal depressor;  ALWAYS HAVE VEHICLE IN PARK WHEN STARTING VEHICLE!!!

  17. Shut vehicle off and Measure Caster standing outside of vehicle and using the steering wheel

  18. Start vehicle and level the steering wheel

  19. Save before measurements while documenting steering wheel position

  20. Produce the “Print Symptoms” printout if the alignment is not sold yet

  21. Adjust rear camber then rear toe where appropriate

  22. Adjust front camber, caster where appropriate;  Verify any caster adjustments; NOTE: if these adjustments are performed by shifting the sub-frame, these adjustments should be performed prior to rear camber/toe adjustments

  23. Adjust front toe using WinToe where appropriate (follow all steps in WinToe)

  24. Verify Steering wheel is positioned “level”

  25. Reset any on-board systems

  26. Produce the appropriate printout

  27. Remove and properly store targets/sensors

  28. Reset the aligner

  29. Replace turn plate bridges behind turn plates;  Roll vehicle off front turn plates;  ALWAYS LEAVE REAR WHEEL CHOCK BEHIND THE REAR OF WHEEL TO AVOID ROLLING VEHICLE OFF THE ALIGNMENT RACK!!!

  30. Re-pin all turn plates and slip plates

  31. Lower alignment rack

  32. Back vehicle off alignment rack
